The Cucuruchos are penitents dressed in lilac and with their faces covered, who participate in the procession of Procession of Jesus del Gran Poder as an act of faith and expiation of sins. Their clothing, of European medieval origin, arrived in Quito in the sixteenth century and has evolved over time, becoming a distinctive symbol of Holy Week in Quito.

The Arrastre de Caudas is a religious ceremony of Roman origin that takes place in the Cathedral, where eight canons dress in black with long caudas symbolizing the sins of the world. The ritual represents the passing on of the virtues of Jesus Christ to the faithful, similar to the ancient military tradition in which a deceased general passed on his strength to the army. The colors used in the vestments have symbolic meanings: black for mourning, red for martyrdom and white for purity.

The Nazarenes in the Holy Week in Quito have their origin in the tradition of Seville, Spain, but have developed elements of their own, such as the taped bonetes. This distinctive feature, visible in Quito's cucuruchos since the 19th century, could be linked to indigenous traditions, showing the cultural fusion in Quito's religious processions.

The Alma Santa uses a large cone made of light materials to maintain balance. In the 19th century, the cucuruchos used reed bonetes lined with colored cloth. In Cuenca, their headdress in the shape of an ear of wheat reflects the mestizo influence, symbolizing gratitude for the crops and the fertility of the land.

The Arrastre de Caudas, performed only in Quito, is a ceremony more than 500 years old in the Metropolitan Cathedral. Inspired by a Roman rite, it symbolizes the transfer of Christ's virtues to the faithful by means of a black mantle. It is a solemn and unique event in Quito's Holy Week.

TOUR OF THE SEVEN CHURCHES

This tradition contemplates the visit to seven churches that represent the route that Jesus took to Calvary. The churches decorate their altars with silverware and purple cloth, a tabernacle is placed and in its center the ciborium with the hosts as a reminder that Jesus has been taken prisoner. Among the churches visited are: La Concepción, Santa Clara, Carmen Alto, San Francisco, La Compañía, La Catedral and San Agustín, El Sagrario among others.

The Good Friday Procession in Quito is one of the most important religious events, gathering thousands of faithful in the Historic Center. It starts at 12h00 from the San Francisco Church, remembering the hour when Jesus was condemned. The cucuruchos and Veronicas, symbols of penitence and devotion, accompany Jesus of Great Power and the Sorrowful Virgin in a tour through emblematic streets. At 3:00 p.m. the procession ends, marking the hour of Christ's death, and at 6:00 p.m. the descent, an emotional representation of his burial, takes place.

The Procession of Jesus del Gran Poder travels 7 kilometers in the south of Quito, passing through 19 neighborhoods in a journey of 4 hours. It is organized by the group "Jesus del Gran Poder", with concentration at 11h00 in the church Virgen del Quinche, in the neighborhood La Union, parish Chilibulo. This event gathers hundreds of parishioners together with traditional characters such as cucuruchos, Veronicas, penitents and Romans, who keep alive the essence of Quiteño processions.

This procession is not massive, but has the meaning more of neighborhood, where the Nazarenes participate whose attire is a hooded robe that covers almost the entire face of the characters, and the Veronicas. The Procession in the San Francisco neighborhood begins at 11:00, representing the last days of Jesus, with the holy souls wearing turbans of up to 5 meters. At 15:00, the ceremony of the Seven Words takes place in a church adorned with olive branches and rosemary, symbolizing Mount Calvary. At the end, with the death of Christ, camaretas are thrown and the devils burst into the parish, creating an impressive closing.
