A journey that intertwines myth and nature in the Andean Chocó — where ancestral legends come alive among forests, waterfalls, and biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth. This two-day route reveals the deep connection between Ecuador’s cultural heritage and its living ecosystems.

Day 1 – Legends Along the Sacred Trails

Tulipe

The day begins at 8:00 a.m. in Tulipe, an archaeological site that preserves the ceremonial pools built by the ancient Yumbo people. Their alignment with the stars and water channels reflects a profound understanding of nature and astronomy. (Entrance: $3)

Yunguilla

The route continues toward Yunguilla, a community nestled in the Andean foothills that has transformed conservation into a way of life. Visitors can join in local activities such as cheese and jam making or explore forest trails with local guides. (Cost: $7 – $30)

Lunch

Lunch is served at 12:00 p.m. in community dining areas featuring ingredients grown on-site and traditional Andean recipes

Pahuma Orchid Reserve

The journey heads toward Pahuma Orchid Reserve, home to more than 300 species of orchids, bromeliads, and hummingbirds. Walk along the misty trails and listen to the forest’s symphony — a living legend of the Chocó Andino. (Entrance: $3)

Eco-lodge dinner

The day closes with lodging and dinner at an eco-lodge or local guesthouse, surrounded by the tranquil sounds of the cloud forest.

Day 2 – Forests of Mystery and Life

Maquipucuna Reserve

Breakfast is served, followed by a visit to Maquipucuna Reserve, one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots. Here, visitors may spot the Andean spectacled bear, observe exotic birds, and walk along trails that tell the story of coexistence between humans and nature. (Entrance: $25)

Lunch

At 12:30 p.m., lunch is offered at the reserve’s restaurant, highlighting local flavors and sustainable ingredients.

Mashpi Shungo

In the afternoon, the trip continues to Mashpi Shungo, a community project dedicated to cacao cultivation and artisanal chocolate making. Participants learn about the cacao’s sacred history and its modern transformation into fine chocolate — an experience that fuses legend and taste. (Entrance: $15).
